Opening Range Breakout (ORB) Mastery

The first few minutes of the Indian market (09:15 - 09:30) define the trend for the day. ORB logic helps you capture the "Institutional Open."

ORB Visual

1. What is the Opening Range?

The opening range is the High and Low reached during the first candle(s) of the day. On AlgoStraddle, we specifically track the 5-minute or 15-minute ORB.

Institutional orders often hit the floor in this window, creating a "Zone" of support and resistance that often lasts the entire day.

2. The ORB Trading Rule

Bullish Breakout

When the price closes ABOVE the ORB High. This suggests a trend day towards the upside.

Target: Call Option (CE)

Bearish Breakdown

When the price closes BELOW the ORB Low. This suggests heavy selling pressure.

Target: Put Option (PE)

3. Using ORB Lines on AlgoStraddle

You don't need to manually draw lines. Merely toggle the ORB Lines checkbox on our main dashboard:

  • The purple horizontal lines will automatically appear based on the day's opening volatility.
  • Use these lines as "Stop Loss" levels. If you buy a breakout, your stop loss should usually be the ORB Low or the VWAP.
High Probability Tip: If an ORB Breakout happens while the price is above VWAP, it is a 9/10 conviction trade.

4. False Breakouts

Sometime price breaks the high but immediately comes back in. This is a "Trap." To avoid this:

  1. Wait for a Full Candle Close above the line (don't buy mid-wick).
  2. Check the Volume. A true breakout ALWAYS has higher relative volume.
